Instructions

Start by heating some oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the finely chopped onions and minced beef. Stir everything together and let it cook slowly, allowing the onions to soften and the beef to brown nicely. This should take about 7 to 10 minutes. As the ingredients cook, sprinkle in the salt and pepper to taste. The aroma of the sizzling onions and seasoned meat will start filling your kitchen, which is always a good sign that you're on the right track.

Next, take a round baking tray and give it a good grease with some oil; this will help prevent the pastry from sticking and ensure a beautifully golden crust. Now, lay down your first sheet of filo pastry gently into the tray. Be careful because filo can be quite delicate. Then, spread a thin, even layer of your meat and onion filling over the pastry. This layer should be light enough to keep the pie from becoming heavy, but flavorful enough to shine through.

Cover this filling with another sheet of filo pastry, but before you place it down, brush it generously with oil. This little trick keeps the pastry moist and helps it bake up crisp and flaky. Repeat this layering process , filling, then oiled filo pastry , building up about five or six layers in total. Each layer should be treated with care and love, just like assembling a delicious little gift.

Once your layers are all in place, finish with a final sheet of filo pastry on top, again brushed well with oil. This top layer will brown beautifully in the oven, sealing all those tasty layers inside. Pop the tray into a preheated oven set at 200ºC (392ºF) and bake for about 30 minutes . Keep an eye on it towards the end; you want the top to turn a gorgeous golden brown and get delightfully crispy.

When it's done baking, take the burek out and let it rest for a few minutes. Then, cut it into quarters for serving. The combination of the crunchy, buttery pastry and the savory, spiced meat filling is simply irresistible. Serve it warm, and enjoy every comforting bite!
